This CIDA-funded project was initiated at the specific request of local residents and regulatory bodies concerned about the possible effects of refinery emissions on the health of people in encroaching settlements. The project team developed an emissions inventory protocol of criteria contaminants and VOCs for all refinery sources that refinery staff could maintain. Dispersion modelling in a coastal environment provided guidance on the expected contribution of the refinery to municipal air quality. The project provided implementable recommendations for enhancing the municipal ambient air quality monitoring network including the addition of a station near the refinery.
